Honey Bee Fragrance Oil is here!

What's sweet as honey? Honey Bee FO. After many customer requests, we finally hit THE right honey for you. Yummy, drippy honey by bees flying in fields of wildflowers in fresh mountain air. This is a complex and beautiful fragrance of sweet honey balanced and rounded by hints of powdery wildflowers, vanilla and sandalwood. If you need a strong honey scent, this is it! Works wonderfully in candles, soaps and toiletries.

Update

As many of you know, raw materials pricing has skyrocketed out of control in the last several months. I want to post to let you know how we are handling it.

We will NOT do a blanket, across-the-board price increase. That's just not reasonable or fair. Any increases will be done on specific products which incur increases from the manufacturer. We won't artificially inflate prices only to have frequent "sales."

So far, we have been able to absorb most of the price increases through diligent cost-saving actions. We recycle shipping boxes, we use newspaper and biodegradable peanuts for packing orders, we maximize employee payroll hours, we maximize warehouse space and bulk purchasing, and we try to always make informed purchasing decisions. If a product's price goes so high as to make it an unreasonable purchase option for you, we will go out-of-stock until the price lowers.

Today we will be raising the minimum purchase requirement from $12.00 to $15.00 on both sites - RusticEscentuals and LipBalmTubes.com.

In addition to skyrocketing raw materials, shipping has also increased due to fuel costs & surcharges. Again, we are trying to purchase in larger bulk to make the most of transportation dollars. We can't control what a package costs to ship to you, but we can take as many measures as possible to save costs on our end which results in stable product pricing.

We are a true wholesale business and want to offer as many product options for you as possible. The current raw material and economic climates are making adding new products a little more difficult, but we will continue to search as we wait for the climates to stabilize. We refuse to compromise quality.

Look for a new Facebook page very soon - it's in the works! Melissa and I need a better way to communicate with everyone more frequently and are eager to be jumping into social networking.

Pre-Spring Cleaning

I realize it isn't yet Spring (despite how much we are wishing for it!), but we're beginning to clean up & organize the warehouse from the busy holiday season and looking toward spring, summer and fall. We'll be adding new products along the way (there are several already in the works), which means we need to make room for them on the shelves. Be checking the Fragrance Oil Clearance Rack and Specials pages in the days and weeks to come for some fantastic bargains.

What causes the smell after rain?

Most people notice a distinctive smell in the air after it rains. It's frequently linked with spring, like smell of fresh cut grass is associated with summer. You'll find it in a lot of poetry and also on many inspirational lists of things to be happy about. But what causes it?

As it turns out, the smells people associate with rainstorms can be caused by a number of things. One of the more pleasant rain smells, the one we often notice in the woods, is actually caused by bacteria! Actinomycetes, a type of filamentous bacteria, grow in soil when conditions are damp and warm. When the soil dries out, the bacteria produce spores in the soil. The wetness and force of rainfall kick these tiny spores up into the air where the moisture after a rain acts as an aerosol (just like an aerosol air freshener). The moist air easily carries the spores to us so we breathe them in. These spores have a distinctive, earthy smell we often associate with rainfall. The bacteria are extremely common and can be found in areas all over the world, which accounts for the universality of this sweet "after-the-rain" smell. Since the bacteria thrives in moist soil but releases the spores once the soil dries out, the smell is most acute after a rain that follows a dry spell, although you'll notice it to some degree after most rainstorms.

Another sort of smell is caused by the acidity of rain. Because of chemicals in the atmosphere, rainwater tends to be somewhat acidic, especially in urban environments. When it comes in contact with organic debris or chemicals on the ground, it can cause some particularly aromatic reactions. It breaks apart soil and releases minerals trapped inside, and it reacts with chemicals, such as gasoline, giving them a stronger odor. These reactions generally produce more unpleasant smells than bacteria spores, which is why the after-the-rain smell isn't always a good one. Like the smell caused by the bacteria spores, the smell of chemical reactions is most noticeable when it rains following a dry spell. This is because once the chemicals on the ground have been diluted by one downpour - they don't have the same reaction with the rainwater.

Another after-the-rain smell comes from volatile oils that are released by plants and trees. The oil then collects on surfaces such as rocks. The rain reacts with the oil on the rocks and carries it as a gas through the air. This scent is like the bacteria spores in that most people consider it a pleasant, fresh smell.

These are a few common rain smells, but there are also all sorts of other scents after it rains. There are many aromatic materials the moisture & impact of rain can stir up, and the moist atmosphere following a downpour is particularly good at carrying these particles through the air. So, when you talk about the after-the-rain smell with a friend, you may mean one thing while your friend is thinking of something else. You'll both agree, however, that the air has a much stronger aroma to it after a good rain.

New FO now in stock

We received a customer request for a Victoria's Secret type - Honeysuckle & White Patchouli. Once the sample came in from the manufacturer, we fell in love - especially since it's dead on to the VS original. It's now in stock and we think you'll adore it also! This sophisticated feminine scent is absolutely divine in a warm and indulgent way.

Product shortage notification

EUGENOL

Eugenol is a liquid extracted from certain essential oils, especially clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, basil and bay leaf. This extract can sometimes be a common raw ingredient in the manufacture of fragrance oils. Most all of the major fragrance oil manufacturers are having a huge issue with obtaining Eugenol right now. The entire clove leaf/Eugenol crop essentially never happened due to the complete lack of the necessary "dry season" in Indonesia. Most manufacturers are unable to obtain Eugenol from their suppliers - if they *are* able to procure a limited supply, prices are up at least 400%. The current situation is dire, manufacturers are helpless in obtaining Eugenol and new crops are not expected until spring/summer 2011.

The Eugenol shortage has started affecting our ability to obtain a few fragrance oils. These oils are low in stock and we anticipate not being able to purchase more until next summer:

Madagascar Spice

Pumpkin Bread

We will continue to update as we get in reports from our manufacturers. We will also continue to update on any shortages of fragrance oils that we will not be able to restock until the Eugenol crisis passes. Please order what you need now - we will process orders in the order received until current stock is exhausted. Thank you.

Website update

Our new shopping cart is ready, so we will be moving the site to a new host and installing the shopping cart this weekend. The upgrade will begin late Friday afternoon/early evening and the site may be unavailable anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of days depending on how you access the site. Please make sure that you place any urgent orders before close of business on Friday to ensure your order is processed before the site goes down.

I'm certain we will have a few growing pains as the shopping cart is implemented, but it should not take long. The new cart has many wonderful features that you've been asking for so I hope you'll be pleased. There will be no more issues with the cart timing out and you'll have the option to create and save a "wish list" that you can come back to later.

Thank you in advance for your patience.

Product updates

We are still busy working to get in products that have been requested. Today we added more colors of lip balm tube caps: Beige, Tan, Yellow and Deep Orange. These will coordinate very well with lip balm flavors! Now you can finally have a perfect match for all of your vanilla flavored balms.

Another product has returned, but it's better than the original - Lip Balm Sweetener. It's also more concentrated and less expensive! This sweetener is made from Stevia suspended in organic Coconut Oil - it's an all-natural and vegan-friendly way to sweeten your lip balms and lip glosses. Pricing is $4.25 for a one-ounce bottle with discounts for larger bottles.

We are also now offering our Lip Balm Bases in smaller sizes - 4 oz. tubs. As we get them repackaged, the web sites will be updated. You can currently purchase the Soy, Natural (A) and Shea & Jojoba bases in the smaller 4-ounce size.

More coming soon! We are testing Lip Tints for coloring lip balm as well as a wide variety of new fragrance oils, bottle options and candle tins. Please let me know if you have specific product requests. You can contact me at 864-582-9335 or send an email to Amy@RusticEscentuals.com. Thank you!

Recycling: Don't let anyone tell you it's not worth it!

We are constantly looking for new ways to be "green" and improve our efficiencies in the office and warehouse. We are now exclusively using environmentally friendly cleaning products as well as buying recycled and environmentally friendly products such as packing peanuts, copy/printer paper, paper towels and assorted office & break room supplies. We recycle all of our FO drums and cans in addition to all paper generated in the office and boxes in the warehouse. Every can, drum, paper towel and piece of paper *does* make a difference! I have been shocked at how much actual trash we generate - it's very little because so much of it is now recycled instead of tossed. We have equipped the break room with recycle bins for plastic water bottles and soda cans as well as using biodegradable knives and forks.
Increased efficiency = savings for us that we pass on to our customers!

Don't let anyone ever tell you that recycling is a waste of time or that it takes just as much energy to recycle as it does to produce the raw materials. Even if recycling were just to reduce the amount of material in landfills and reduce the exploitation of natural resources recycling would be worth it, but the energy savings are also very real. Let's look at metals.

Look at the energy saved by recycling aluminum versus digging it out of the ground and refining it. It's no wonder recycled aluminum fetches such a high price per pound!

New metals made using recycled material / Energy Savings

Zinc --- 20% / 60%
Lead --- 74% / 60%
Steel --- 42% / 62%
Copper --- 32% / 85%
Aluminum --- 39% / 95%

There are also other environmental benefits. For example, using recycled steel to make new steel enables reductions such as:

86% in air pollution
40% in water use
76% in water pollution.
